Tips to keep your Dog's coat glossy and shiny

Updated: Feb 5, 2023

Much like we take care of ourselves and feel better about it, our dogs will also feel so much better if their coat is taken care of well. While they can only do so much before it starts to itch and bother them, there are different ways in which you can keep your dog’s coat from dulling or falling out.

Nutrients for a shiny coat

Keep in mind that your first line of defence when it comes to the health of your dog’s coat should be a well-maintained diet full of proper nutrients, as well as a proper grooming and bathing schedule based on breed.

Omega-3 supplements: Besides a shiny coat, omega-3 supplements also support healthy joints, immune response, and heart and kidneys.

Combination fatty acid supplements: Besides being sold singularly, you can also find over-the-counter comprehensive fatty acid formulas that include both omega-3 and omega-6.

Yeast and garlic tablets: Strange though it may sound, yeast and garlic tablets are formulated with B-complex vitamins and fortified with garlic to help control shedding, condition skin and provide an overall glossy coat.

Vitamin A: necessary for growth and skin repair.

Vitamin E: protects skin cells from oxidant damage.

Vitamin C: helps with wound healing.

Biotin: aids in the utilization of protein.

Riboflavin (or B2): necessary for fat and protein metabolism.

Zinc: necessary for fat and protein metabolism.

Copper: involved in tissue, pigment and protein synthesis.

Choosing the Right Shampoo

Bathing your dog is an important chore that helps in reducing your pooch’s fur shedding. But while you

make sure to not miss out on this regimen, it is also essential to make use of the right shampoo while

bathing your dog.

1. Pick a dog shampoo with natural conditioners

Conditioners use ingredients that could be natural or synthetically made. The instant detangling products which are used after the bath mainly use synthetically made silicones. On the other hand, dog conditioning shampoos made using natural polymers interact with hair proteins and provide good conditioning effects.

2. Choose a pet shampoo with natural and essential oils

The use of pure essential oils compliment natural activities and further enhances skin and coat wellness.

3. Read the product label

Most pet parents unknowingly do not read the product label of pet hygiene products. To know ‘what’s inside the bottle, good brands provide a clear & detailed ingredients list. Display of critical and mandatory information on product labels is very essential. Many brands do not list the same given poor regulatory standards and customer ignorance.

Dog shampoo ingredients to avoid

When shopping for a shampoo, be sure to examine the ingredients listed on the bottle before making a purchase. Avoid artificial fragrances and dyes, which can irritate your dog’s eyes and skin, but do look for natural fragrances, like chamomile, lavender, eucalyptus, and citrus.

An important thing to remember is this: never use shampoos or conditioners designed for humans. Our skin is less sensitive than a dog’s, and human shampoos are designed to wash off the natural oils and wax on our hair. That’s fine for humans, but it will leave your dog’s coat dull and brittle and can cause rashes.

And finally, take your furry friend to the vet if you’re still not sure what the problem is or can’t seem to find a way to get the shiny coat back. It could be any number of reasons and getting someone to look at him would definitely help with understanding what is the best method to follow.
