5 Essentials for your Pooch during Winters

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

There’s a cool breeze in the air, the days are shorter, the nights are longer and sweaters are now everyone’s best friends. So, here’s our list of winter essentials for your pooch!

1. Warm and thick bedding: Winters may be hard on our pets; buying them warm, thick bedding will help them have a good night's sleep. Also keep a heavy blanket close by. Depending on the room's temperature, they may vary where they sleep.

2. Warm clothing: Purchase thick sweaters, jackets, scarves, socks, or beanies for your pets. Our pets are also cold! Warm clothing can keep them warm and comfortable in the cold. Keeping your pets warm is especially important when they are young because puppies and kittens have less muscle and fat and are less tolerant of cold weather. Choose a coat that is made of natural materials and that does not get caught in their nails. Remove the coat on a daily basis, air it out, brush your dog, and then reapply the coat. Leaving a coat on a long-haired dog for extended periods of time is extremely unhealthy.

3. Paw Balm: Since your pet's paw pads are fragile and sensitive, winter can be very rough on them. The cold weather can develop cracks and dry up their paws, making walking difficult for them. Check your pet's paw pads for cracks or dryness and use a paw balm to protect and hydrate their paws. Choose a balm that can be used on your pet's snout as well as his or her elbows.

4. Dietary supplements: To maintain your dog's hair and skin healthy in the winter, it would be wise to add a natural dietary coat supplement to their diet. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, such as high-quality fish oil or krill oil, should be an excellent addition to your dog's diet as they will support the health of their skin, coat, and joints. Because they tend to expend more calories, boosting their food intake is also a good option. In order to encourage your dog to drink more water throughout the winter, add a supplement like chia seeds to their meal after soaking them in water.

5. Dry Shampoos & Conditioning Sprays: Winter means fewer baths. To keep your dog away from catching a chill you can use sprays to keep them smelling good. There are spray-and-brush products on the market these days that repel dirt, add sheen, condition the dog's hair, prevent knots, and keep them smelling fresh.
